New Orleans Artists Entertain at the Yale Street Arts Market
Houston Food Bank Donations Accepted

Houston Heights- Wednesday, September 28, 2005- The year and a half
old Yale Street Arts Market held on the first Saturday of each month continues
this Saturday, October 1st with entertainment provided by displaced New Orleans
musicians and puppeteers. Open from 9am to 5pm every first Saturday, the market
regularly features emerging and established artists from all over the
Houston area
and Texas behind Kaplan's Ben Hur on Yale at 21st Streets.

The Fisherman and His Wife, scheduled for 12:30 on Saturday, first toured
three months before the devastation of Hurricane Katrina,
New Orleans' Calliope Puppets offers a theater piece for family audiences
focused on the critical impact of coastal wetlands loss.
Set in south Louisiana, the traditional Brothers Grimm tale is of the wife who
asks too much of the magical fish her husband catches.
Classic characters, lively songs, and imaginative adaptation promote
understanding of the effects human decisions have on wetlands residents.
Presented by puppeteer, Karen Konnerth and musician, Vic Shepherd.

Following The Fisherman and His Wife, Vic Shepherd will perform.
Vic has been a fixture on the New Orleans scene for over 25 years,
performing primarily on guitar or banjo. He has appeared in just about
every musical venue and situation that New Orleans has to offer.
Including The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Mardi Gras Parades,
French Quarter Festival, the Jean Lafitte Jazz National Park, Bourbon
Street nightclubs, riverboats, fine restaurants, conventions, and
special events.

Saturday, September 24, 2005

Well, all's well in the Heights. Having a beer at the Shiloh right now. Come on by!

Whew! Hope all are fine. No worries here in Conroe area.

Friday, September 23, 2005

Oh-woh-woh-oh-oh!

Watched an incredible sunset and then the rain finally started. Then stopped. More to come I'm sure.

4:20pm- Report

Carolyn just announced it's cocktail hour! Woo Hoo!
All we can do now is wait this thing out.
Got food, water, games and various implements of destruction to fight
our way out.
Looks like the worst of the storm will miss us now.
We are so lucky (and smart) to have turned around last night when we did.
The news shows all those areas now to get the brunt of Rita.
And most of our road companions that stayed on that highway ran out
of gas and got shuffled off to shelters....or sat there till this afternoon.
That just ain't right. Lot of good Samaritan stories coming out of
that too though.
Folks opening there shops so people can freshen up and get water.

Well. This may be my last post via the Internet. Sorry in advance if
future posts are cryptic and full of misspellings!

Check out Michael-Ann's blog too, she's been updating with photos!
Hey Mickie & Gordie!

Cheers! MargaRITA time. WITH SALT DAMNIT!

Stormy Weather & ART

Hey Everyone! Just a quick note to wish everyone the best.
I hope if you are reading this you are high & dry, and WIND proof
through the weekend.

Carolyn and I are near Conroe at my Mom's house. Tried to get out of town and
realized we'd be out of gas being shuffled from one shelter to the next, so we
came back. Took 9 hours to drive 40 miles. And about 45 minutes to get back.
Very disturbing out there. We were on 59 North just south of Lufkin.

We had been planning a party of sorts for my birthday this Sunday,
which of course
will not happen now. SO after this mess is over with, lets all have a
drink or two
somewhere in the Heights eh? I'm sure tall tales will prevail!
Keep an eye out for that one.
Oh yeah. 40! Woo Hoo!

If you are interested, I have a blog at http://artistsatlarge.blogspot.com/
and I've been texting messages in periodically so long distance relatives
can keep up with us here. If you can, post a comment there to let
everyone know how and where you are. You do not have to be a member
of anything.

Here's a note I got from Wayne Gilbert about Saturday's art show:

From: Wayne Gilbert
Date: Sep 22, 2005 9:59 AM
>Well folks, I waited as long as I could to see where Rita might go. If for
>some strange reason the storm goes further up the coast and the damage is
>minimal I will be at the Gallery Saturday night. However, my best guess is
>that the pandemonium factor will be great enough to put the Back Room Show
>on hold until next weekend. October 1, 2005. That is provided there is
>not enough damage to keep us from opening. But I will plan on an opening
>night eventually, ( No Matter What ) as we have all worked so hard and we
>have so many wonderful artists showing work. I'll keep you posted. WD/ PS
>KEEP SAFE AND ON HIGH GROUND and GOOD LUCK!

Well. More later on the blog. Take care everyone!
Still planning on being at Yale St Market next week. For now anyway.

Be safe!
-Mitch & Carolyn

Life in the fast lane

How's life in the fast lane? We're gearing up here in Montgomery Co.

So. If you are looking at the TV and they have one of those maps up, you'll
see CONROE of course, and we are basically just under the letter "C".

Okay then.

I made this a blog post too. I'm going to take some photos now for
before shots.

Cheers!
Mitch-Carolyn & Judy (mama!)

No more Rita's for me!

Howdy! Something tells me that there is going to be a lot of web
surfing in Houston
today. Until the power goes, I may just do the same.
Will certainly try to keep this updated.

So, as you've read Carolyn and I are at my Mom's house in N Houston by Conroe.
Pretty high up here, so we only have to worry about the other effects
of hurricane damage. High wind, tornadoes, and salt in the eye.
(Rita, get it?)

If we're stuck here for awhile, looks like we'll eat pretty well too.

So. What are/have you done to prepare? I'm heading out to tape up windows
in a sec. Be back.....

Thursday, September 22, 2005

Damn! Can't remember my password to login this blog! At least I can text my posts. Still, if the power goes, not many will be able to see this anyway. We're ready here to hunker down. Stay safe!

Someone tell TX dot to open 59!

Now look. On the radio they keep saying we are fleeing. We are NOT fleeing. We took an early vacation. Okay then.

The sad thing is...we keep seeing people stopped on the side of the road, and you know, you think break time. But know, They're returning to the wild! I just saw it happen! No kidding.

If We're traveling 5 miles an hour, and Rita is traveling at 14 miles, and We're about 540 miles ahead. How much time do we have before We're riding shotgun?

Yahoo IM you can text message cell phones! hint hint.....
Gone 9 miles- woo hoo

Been back on 59 N for about 3 hours. average speed is 5 MPH. I'm buying a paint gun. mo later.

You know you can comment on this blog. And I hope you do! Let us know how You're doing. - MC

Traffic is just not moving, so we turned back to my Mama's house. We'll take off again in a few hours.

Well hells bells. By the time we get out of town, it'll be Sunday! I think we are near Mikeee's house. Loop 494

Just a test!

Wednesday, September 14, 2005

Attention! This is a test of the emergency text messaging system. If this had been a real test, Mitch would have said something witty.

Blog this!
